The Vaughn College women's basketball team battled the Bristol Community College Bayhawks at the LaFrance Gymnasium on Saturday, November 9. The Warriors traveled to Fall River, Massachusetts for their first ever match-up between the two programs. The women competed extremely well despite being down a few players that were unable to make out-of-state trip.
The face-paced uptempo game took its toll on the Warriors in the opening quarter. At the end of the first half the Warriors trailed the Bayhawks by 21 points. They would cut the lead in the beginning of the third quarter to make the deficit more manageable. Unfortunately the Warriors were not able to sustain their intense level of play throughout the second half do to foul trouble and lack of depth. They would go on to fall to the Bayhawks by a final score of 82-57.
Vaughn College was lead by a pair of freshmen, Ewdina Wright (New Orleans, LA) and Joleen Gomez (Bridgeport, CT). Wright filled the box score with a season-high 34 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Gomez finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
Sophomore forwards Tahisha Jocelyn (Elmont, NY) and Alexa Cruz (Pompton, Lakes) lead the team in rebounding. Jocelyn chipped in seven points grabbed nine rebounds. Cruz (Pompton Lakes, NJ) added six points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
